What To Consider When Choosing The Size Of Your Skip Bin

Oct 14, 2018

Renovating, moving house or even just spring cleaning will have you generating waste that can be too much for your regular household waste bins to handle. So, the best solution is to hire a skip! You can find skip bins online in a variety of different sizes that are suitable for your needs. The only thing you need to worry about is choosing the right size for you.

Here are the things to consider when choosing the size of your skip bin.

The Size Of Your Project

Ultimately, the bin size will depend on the size of your project. There a wide variety of sizes to choose from, starting at 2m all the way up to 23m!  A 2m skip is roughly the equivalent of 8 wheelie bins which makes the largest offering (23m) the equivalent of 92 wheelie bins!

In general, a skip bin that’s around 4-6m will be enough for most home renovation projects if you’re just renovating one room. But, if you’re working on a larger scale – say, renovating a garden or adding an extension – then choose a larger bin.

If you’re moving home, then you could need anywhere between a 4m and 15m skip bin for hire. It depends on how big your house is and how much waste you’ve got lying around!

For even larger projects – like completely clearing out a property or undergoing a massive renovation – then you may need either a 19m or 23m skip bin for all your waste.

The Items Being Disposed

Along with the size of your project, the items you’re disposing of are equally important. Small items like tiles, bricks or soil will take up less room than bulky items like wood posts or plasterboard.

The Skip Placement

Lastly, if you’re after a skip to hire, then you will need somewhere to place it. This can impact the size you choose. For example, if you’re planning on storing the skip on your driveway, then you may be restricted to a certain size to ensure it fits. If you need to place your skip bin on a nature strip or road near your house, a permit will be required and this may limit the size you are allowed.
